The Brand

Crafting cyder since 1728, Aspalls draw on a wealth of family heritage that spans nine generations. Their founder Clement Chevalier - owner of Aspall Hall in Suffolk - decided to plant apple trees on arable land and create a pure, unadulterated cyder unlike so many other producers of the time.

This maverick thinking and commitment to high standards are still cornerstones of the brand today, which is why Aspalls wanted the ultimate stand out font to represent their premium brand.

The Vision

We took inspiration from Aspalls itself - the Hall, the village, the cyder house and the beautiful agricultural land of Suffolk. The shape of the font became elegant and organic, taking inspiration from natural shapes and forms. The intricate detail of the branding and font handle are a nod to Aspalls Georgian roots.

A premium silver finish always felt right, and through photo real visualisation we added a complementary gold base, bringing the pure cyder colour into play. Illuminated branding on the side of the font completed the vision, making the Aspalls name stand out wherever it was placed.

The finished product draws the eye and makes an experience of ordering Aspalls. Customers feel the history, heritage and premium quality of the Aspalls brand.

Belhaven Best

Brewing for almost 300 years, the Belhaven Brewery has survived an industrial revolution, two world wars and an increasingly competitive market to claim its place as one of Scotlands favourite brewers.

Belhaven Best was launched in 1991 and pioneered a new form of beer drinking in Scotland. Known as a pint for all occasions, it’s a creamy, honey-coloured brew - a perfectly balanced beer. As Scotland’s number one ale, we were approached to design a new beer font that made sure it remained the drink of choice for pub-goers everywhere.

The Design

The new font for Belhaven Best and Best Extra Cold was designed alongside Belhaven’s marketing team. We kept their industrial heritage in mind with a black matte metallic finish.

Subtle and balanced just like the beer, the unique shape and height of this font makes it stand out on the bar. A completely original design for a completely original beer, it’s easy to pick out from the competition.

The history of Fuller’s brewery is entwined with the brewing history of London, and goes right back to the late 1600s. Even the brewery as we know it - built in 1828 next to the Thames oxbow - is a landmark of London’s industrial heritage.

Fuller’s have led the British brewing scene, investing, innovating and building on their rich history and heritage.

As Fuller’s relaunched London Pride, we were approached to create a new font for their own estate and worldwide export market. It had to be instantly recognisable to the consumer in the off-trade, a perfect platform for the rebrand yet allowing their other beer brands to be fitted.

We wanted to help to tell the stories that exist within the brewery, celebrate its rich history and encapsulate everything that’s unique about the brand.

The Vision

As today’s consumer demands more choice in their beer, Greene King developed a range of small-batch craft beers in order to experiment, innovate and show off their brewing talents.

Angram were commissioned to develop a new Craft unit to promote this offering, enhancing the Greene King proposition on the bar and guiding consumers to buy.

The Design

We took our cues from the brewing process, specifically the traditional copper fermenting vessels used in Greene King’s brewhouse. The base of the new craft font has recognisable details like brass bolts and engraving, all of which reflect this traditional brewing equipment.

The tap handle adds to the crafted feel, individually made in wood and branded with the Greene King logo. At a glance, consumers can see the depth of the range and choose which beer to try next.

The new craft font has been hugely successful for Greene King, enhancing the customer experience from the moment they walk into a pub and see Greene King’s range on the bar.

Enhancing the Fuller’s Estate:

With almost 400 pubs around London and the Southeast, Fuller’s are known for carrying the very best in fine ales and beers. We were approached to design and develop a new range of handpumps and Lo-line T-bar to be rolled out across the estate, enhancing all the brands they serve on the bar.

The new hand pumps are on a raised plinth engraved with Fuller’s well-known motto, ‘Brewed by the side of the Thames’. Each handle is engraved with the Fuller’s cartouche, and the bespoke pump clip holder allows each brand to stand out.

When it came to production, flexibility was key - the Lo-line T-Bar would be used on a wide range of bars for a wide range of beers. Our in-house manufacturing team chose the Angram modular approach and gave two styles of handpump available in Fuller’s bespoke design. They were soon rolled out across the Fuller’s estate, proving hugely successful with customers and bar staff alike.

The Vision

One of the most exciting brewers in the UK today, Innis and Gunn are best-known for their aged oak beer - brews aged in Scottish whisky casks for a distinctive depth of flavour.

On the launch of their new lager and aged oak beer, they approached Angram to design and develop a unique beer font, incorporating the story of aged oak beer. It was important to make an impression - as a departure from their core range, the font had to reflect the rewarding experience of this new Helles-style lager and the heritage of their aged oak beer.

The Heritage

We took our design cues from the industrial heritage of Edinburgh, where Innis and Gunn are based. A long history of engineering and high architecture make the city what it is today, and this is reflected in the detailed, precision-machined font.

As a contrast to the modern steel finish, the long middle section was replaced with oak, a nod to the aged oak beer customers know so well. The result is a traditional yet modern, precise yet organic font, where old and new are combined harmoniously as a whole. It's fair to say these fonts stand out on any bar.

Heartlands

We designed and developed a T-Bar unit with a sleek, contemporary look. A central section houses a 100mm frog eye lens to create a ‘Hero’ brand. Larger than the standard 80mm brand, this allows Mitchells & Butler to showcase the wide selection of the brands that they offer.

Using Angram’s proven modular production method, the unit is cost-effective to manufacture and easy to install exactly where needed.

The unit is available in 3’s, 5’s and 7’s. This unit has proven highly successful in the Heartlands estate for Mitchells &. Butler elevating all brands and enhancing the bar top.

A Handcrafted American Lager

Britain’s oldest brewer, Shepherd Neame, approached us to create a bespoke font for the UK launch of their new licensed beer - Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

Handcrafted in single batches using only the finest ingredients, Boston Lager has a rich, robust and complex taste - it sets the standard for the Samuel Adams range.

When it came to design, we took our cues from a bespoke Samuel Adams tap handle provided by the customer. Made of wood with a copper scroll, we mimicked this look throughout the unit, choosing a cylindrical font with a wooden core wrapped in antique bronze, riveted scrolling. The aged patina evokes turn of the century saloons, carrying though the beer’s Boston heritage.

The Samuel Adams logo and branding has pride of place in a fully-illuminated 3-part pod. Finished in silver, it lifts the design of this unique font.

From Concept To Bar in Record Time

With the help of Shepherd Neame, we were able to take this design from first concept to full production in just 10 weeks.
